John Tremelling John Tremelling as founder of A1 Health and Safety – Cornwall is a former Health and Safety Inspector working for many years both in the Midlands and Cornwall.
Since his return to Cornwall in 1992 John has developed a reputation as an expert in both health and safety enforcement and management.

He was appointed as Penwith District Council’s Safety Advisor and given responsibility to change hearts and minds to ensure Penwith became established as an health and safety exemplar in line with the government’s Revitalising Health and Safety Strategy.

It was during this time as Health, Safety and Transport Manager John served as Chairman for two years for the South West Regional Assembly Safety Advisory Group.

The group’s main aim is to develop local authority standards and guidance in consultation with relevant enforcing bodies and agencies. For many years during this time he also served as the Chairman of the Local Authorities Cornwall Safety Advisors Group.

For the past 12 years John has lectured at Cornwall Business School on health and safety law and practice and is now course manager for the NEBOSH National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety at Penhaligon House Pool. Many practising safety officers in Cornwall have been trained and advised by John during this time.

Now as a qualified Chartered Consultant Practitioner in Occupational Health and Safety and a qualified teacher John’s main aim is to help educate and empower others to manage their risks to the highest possible standard to ensure the safety of all who either work with or come into contact with their work activities.

Dr Ed Ferret Dr Ed Ferret is an experienced health and safety consultant who has practiced for over twenty years. With a PhD and honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University Edward spent thirty years in Higher and Further Education retiring as the Head of Faculty of Technology at Cornwall College in 1993.

Since then he has been an independent consultant to several public bodies and private sector organizations including construction businesses, the Regional Health and Safety Advisor for the Government office (West Midlands) and former Chair of West of Cornwall Primary Care NHS Trust.

Edward has been a member of the National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) since 1995 and Vice Chair for the last seven years. He has also delivered many health and safety courses and was for several years the Manager of NEBOSH courses at Cornwall Business School.

Over the past few years Edward has, with his joint Author Phil Hughes, written and published the well respected NEBOSH course reference books in health and safety.

Brian Capper Brian Capper spent many years working as a Technical Officer and Supervisor for the telephone industry, during which time he developed a keen interest in Quality Management Systems and Health and Safety.

As a trained Union Safety Representative he came quickly to realise health and safety was everyone’s responsibility and that those who create the risks have a duty to work with those who have to work with them to help minimise those risks.

Since his retirement from the telephone industry in 1996 Brian has gone on to undertake many health and safety courses and eventually specialising in Moving and Handling and Risk Assessment Principles and Practice. Brian’s many years of practical experience has stood him in good stead and he has been called upon many times to advise on the quality of risk assessments especially in areas of complexity such as public events where crowd and vehicle control is paramount.

As a Town Councillor and former Mayor he has also acted for many years as health and safety advisor to his local council.

Derrick Wakefield Initially, Derrick Wakefield trained as a psychiatric nurse and married soon after qualifying. However, he was unable to obtain a suitable post and left the NHS to retrain as a Public Health Officer, now called an Environmental Health Officer/Environmental Health Practitioner.

He became an established member of the profession and continued as a practicing local authority officer for 31 years. During this time, he took post qualification training and qualified in air pollution, acoustics and teaching. Derrick retired as a Principal Officer in spring 2006.

During the years as an Environmental Health Practitioner, Derrick worked at four local authorities and undertook work in all disciplines of Environmental Health. This included: housing; in both the private and the rental sector; with repairs to individual houses and those set in multiple occupation, slum clearance and drainage. All forms of Food Safety throughout the retail trade. This was combined, until the mid 1990’s with slaughterhouse duties at both large and small abattoirs together with animal inspection.

Derrick has been involved will all forms of local authority licensing, including animal legislation, the licensing of both the indigenous species and those of several types of monkeys, snakes, bears and other exotics. He spent a lot of time dealing with Statutory Nuisance Procedure, including noise control, general pollution and basic aspects of Health and Safety.

For over twelve years, Derrick has lectured at the local college in food hygiene and also lectures in health and safety. He was a member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) throughout his working years and continues to be a retired member and is a Registered Tutor with the Institution, for their food and health and safety courses.
